Job description



The Hazardous Materials Technician is responsible for the following:

·  Managing the waste program by performing daily collection, transportation, segregation, and processing of waste (hazardous chemical and biological, universal, kitchen grease) from research laboratories and other areas
·  Scheduling hazardous waste pick-ups with vendors and maintaining manifests, databases, and other required documentation
·  Inspecting chemical containers upon delivery to the campus and maintaining the chemical inventory
·  Preparing reports for regulatory agencies and management such as waste accumulation totals, inspection results, etc.
·  Performing inspections of hazardous waste storage rooms and safety related equipment such as safety showers and eyewash stations, AEDs, spill kits, and emergency preparedness kits
·  Collecting and distributing personal protective equipment such as laboratory coats, safety glasses, gloves, etc. 
·  Maintaining inventory and organizing supply and storage areas
·  Responding to, investigating, suggesting mitigation, and providing guidance regarding workplace incidents involving the release of hazardous materials
·  Responding to emergency events such as fire alarms and medical emergencies
·  Any and all other duties and tasks assigned

Education/Training

·  High school diploma or equivalency
·  High school diploma or equivalency

Years of Relevant Experience

·  1-2 years

Other Abilities

·  Good communication skills
·  Ability to learn quickly
·  Ability to use technology (computer, tablet, etc.) to work within various programs and applications
·  Effective tact, diplomacy, and judgement

Physical Work REquiriements and Work Conditions

·  The job involves
·  field work requiring frequent walking, bending, lifting, reaching.
·  Lifting and carrying materials and equipment weighing 50 pounds or less and pushing or pulling materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
·  Must be able to pass a medical evaluation for wearing full-face respirators as well as wear protective clothing up to and including Level B chemical protective ensembles and steel-toe safety shoes.
