Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and experienced Electronics Design Engineer to join GE Power Conversion’s Systems Engineering group and contribute to the development of our next generation products.

The Electronics Design Engineer will be responsible for leading and designing digital and analogue electronic circuits used in power electronic converter systems ranging from: power electronics gating electronics boards, analogue & digital signal processing boards, low voltage power supply units, digital/analogue/wireless communication boards & power electronic circuits. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, support manufacturing, validation & maintenance of electronic circuit boards and PCB subassemblies used in low voltage & medium voltage MW-scale power electronics converter systems.

Key Responsibilities for the Role include:

  • Work with a wider engineering team to define requirements and manage requirements flow down of electronic circuit boards and PCB subassemblies.
  • Specify, design, and document analogue and digital electronic circuits to meet specific application requirements.
  • Undertake all aspects of analogue and digital electronics circuits design and simulation for power electronics systems such as, gating electronics for power semiconductors, analogue and digital process boards, FPGAs and memory circuit boards.
  • Verification, validation, testing of electronic circuit boards and subassemblies.
  • Application of engineering standards and development of design practices to ensure power electronic system designs comply with the relevant health & safety, international standards, and class society rules.
  • Development and maintenance of new and existing analogue and digital circuit PCB designs.
  • Production or supervision of the PCB layout process and generation of the manufacturing information package and liaison with potential manufacturers.
  • Prototype production and initial testing.
  • Support attainment of on-time delivery, cost and quality targets on projects.

Essential skills required for this position

Ideal candidate shall have good knowledge and experience of a substantial proportion of the following:

  • Analogue and Digital circuit design experience is a must for this role.
  • Design of interface circuits, both analogue and digital circuits.
  • Design of microprocessor, FPGA and memory circuits.
  • Experience with circuit simulation design tools for analogue and digital circuit design.

Other relevant skills

These are other desirable skills but not mandatory.

  • Design of SOC (system on chip) circuits, including some appreciation of configuration and software.
  • Knowledge of a variety of component packaging types, surface mount, BGA, QFP etc.
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools such as Altium, OrCAD, Mentor Graphics, CAD Star.
  • Knowledge of Embedded software design, FPGAs etc.
  • Switch mode power supply design.
  • HDL (hardware description language) in particular VHDL.
  • High speed communications such as Ethernet, fibre optic Ethernet and higher speed derivatives thereof.
  • Appreciation of the need for accurate documentation – circuit diagram, BOM, engineering change documents etc.
  • Power electronics – Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN devices.
  • Electrical noise and how to design to limit its effects.

LV and HV (perhaps up to 10kV) insulation, isolation, and screening.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university or college in Electrical Engineering or equivalent subject.
