Junior Underwriter - Commercial Surety

Job description

We are looking for a Junior Underwriter - Commercial Surety to work with the AVP of Commercial and Reclamation Surety to monitor and review, existing Commercial Reclamation accounts on an annual and quarterly basis, analyzing and assessing the financial and operational performance, of private and public companies against projections and expectations, utilizing financial and operational information provided to Aviva or publicly available (in the case of a publicly traded company). Provide a review on an annual basis summarizing the financial and operational results of the account and an update on a quarterly basis to the AVP Commercial and Reclamation Surety view and comment.

This position will require the successful applicant to travel to review account operational facilities, that in some cases are in very remote parts of Canada and the United States.  

What you'll do

This position will provide underwriting and analytical support to:

· 
Monitor and review existing Commercial and Reclamation Surety accounts.

· 
Provide support for the review and acquisition of new Commercial and Reclamation Surety business.

· 
Increase our underwriting capacity to monitor and manage existing risks so that we can effectively market, review and underwrite future opportunities.

· 
Review the financial and operational information provided to Aviva on an annual and quarterly basis and identify potential risk factors that may have a material impact on the account achieving its financial and operational guidance. (i.e. uncertainty in commodity pricing, uncertainty in refinancing, unresolved operational issues) . Work with Senior Underwriters and the AVP Commercial and Reclamation Surety to develop strategies to manage risks.

Review and provide financial and operational analysis on new business opportunities.

What you'll bring

· 
Up to three years of experience reviewing and analyzing financial statements, or a relevant University Degree - preferably commerce, economics and or business co-op degree.

· 
Strong excel skills, should be able to design and develop excel workbooks to effectively assist in the monitoring and review of specific account risks.

· 
Strong communication & presentation skills; to correspond with internal and external stakeholders including our external risk sharing partners such as reinsurers and other primary underwriting companies that are our risk sharing partners.

· 
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

· 
Experience analyzing publicly traded companies, in the resource extraction sector. 

· 
Experience with mining or oil and gas companies
