The world around us is changing. We see increase in global population, new consumer demand pattern through e-commerce and trade, rapid development with disruptive technologies, tougher demands on environmental care and sustainability. All of these trends require us in Volvo Group to be a contributor in society and play our part in providing efficient, environmental friendly and sustainable solutions when it comes to mobility of people and goods – where Volvo Group is driving prosperity through transport solutions.
It is a constant challenge to balance goods reception even flow requirements with transport efficiency and demands from drivers. The Volvo group has more than 30 plants in Europe, each week they receive and unload over 100 000 pallets, making this balancing act an important improvement area.
On one hand an optimized transport efficiency means fully loaded trucks certain days of the weeks with quick unloading, preferably in the early morning. On the other hand when many trucks arrive at the same time the goods reception becomes a bottleneck. The forklift drivers want a balanced workload, an even flow of goods, over the hours of the days and the days of the week. The challenge to balance transport efficiency with capacity in goods reception and unloading is not a unique problem to Volvo, nor to the automotive industry.
In a digital world we see collaboration opportunities and new technology that offer opportunities to work smarter and we are looking to identify European industry best practice for balancing goods reception even flow requirements with transport efficiency
Material Supply, [part of Production Logistics, Volvo Group Trucks Operations] drives the development of the Supply Material process. Our mission is to lead & coordinate development activities to secure material availability at point of use together with our suppliers. We do this by balancing delivery precision, cost optimization and flexibility in all aspects of the supply chain.
What we are looking for?
For this thesis we are looking for two curious persons that enjoys working in a dynamic environment. You have the ability to scan the market for relevant solutions, and able to draw conclusion and present opportunities and recommendations to drive improvement. You have strong social & inter-cultural skills allowing you to interact with Volvo employees both locally and globally. You like to challenge yourself enabling personal development and growth.
The successful candidates are strong in communication (English proficiency is a must) and they have a genuine interest in new technology as an enabler for new and better ways of working. Further they have a holistic mindset and are collaborative by nature.
Thesis questions and expected outcome
We want the students to identify European industry best practice for balancing goods reception even flow requirements with transport efficiency.
The students should identify different practices, new technologies, and collaboration platforms of different types commonly used in Europe for these processes. The study should focus on general cargo goods (FTL/LTL) and road transports
For each practice the students should identify strengths and weaknesses but also document what prereqs are needed and if it could be used by Volvo
Examples of areas to look at
· Carrier – Haulier dialogue
· Use of technology
· Time slot management
· Performance management
· Incoterms – who controls the flow?
· Lead time/ Buffer stock/ transport frequency
· Live unloading /warehouse on wheels (drop trailers) Student profile and application
Master students in Supply Chain Management, Logistics or similar fields
