Job Description

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher zEPHYR

Towards a more efficient exploitation of on-shore and urban wind energy resources, we are looking for a research engineer for our H2020 ETN project.

A total of 15 PhD positions are available in the framework of the European Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) zEPHYR; 8 university positions, 1 at research centre and 4 in industries.

This project is focused on the development of performant wind farms, by simultaneously addressing the individual performance of each turbine, composing the wind farm, and the efficient harvesting of the local wind resource in on-shore and urban environments.

The researchers recruited for zEPHYR will investigate emerging technologies through laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations, addressing the following aspects: mesoscale and microscale atmospheric boundary layer simulations, rotor aerodynamics, aero-acoustics and structural dynamics, atmospheric propagation and human factors, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis and multi-physical optimization.

In that context, Siemens Digital Industries Software (Leuven, Belgium) and Le Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (CSTB, France) are offering an ESR position for a PhD project entitled:

Numerical predictions of wind turbine noise in complex urban environments

The objective of this research is to study and develop innovative numerical methods in order to predict the noise radiated from wind turbines located in complex urban environments. The near field prediction of the wind turbine noise will be carried out using low-order semi-analytical models and finite-element solvers developed at Siemens Digital Industries Software. The propagation of sound waves in urban environments, over large distances, including meteorological, turbulence and topography effects, will be assessed using CSTB outdoor propagation models and auralization techniques. This project will aim at designing a complete workflow, starting from the wind turbine and meteorological inputs, to the far field audio rendering in a complex urban environment. If successful, the proposed strategies will be further developed into a research prototype within the commercial software Siemens Simcenter 3D.

The PhD will be mainly based in Leuven for 18 months and at CSTB for 18 months, under supervision of Dr. Le Bras and Dr. Maillard. The PhD applicant will be registered at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, under the supervision of Prof. Leandro De Santana. Several secondments are foreseen at the partner institutions of the zEPHYR network: University of Twente, Siemens Gamesa (Denmark), the von Karman Institute (Belgium) and the Wageningen University (the Netherlands).

The Multidisciplinary topics addressed in zEPHYR are scientifically challenging and of high technological and economical relevance, promising interesting career perspectives in academic and multi-sectorial industrial environments. The zEPHYR partners do strictly adhere to the ethical standards of the European Charter for Research and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. Female scientists are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must satisfy some eligibility rules, in particular in terms of transnational mobility. A strict equal opportunity, gender neutral and internationally comparable recruitment procedure is implemented.
