Global Corporate Toxicologist

Salary – Starting from £ 47,357 ( dependant upon experience)

Background:

The purpose of the role is to be a subject matter expert in toxicology for Mars Inc. The role reports to the Head of Food Safety Risk Management.

The role will provide chemical food safety risk assessments for ingredients and chemical hazards associated with our commodities. This role will make a significant impact to how Mars identify and understands chemical food safety hazards and will provide the opportunity to work in a team pivotal to the food safety strategy of Mars Inc.

In this role you will:

·  Work within the Corporate Food Safety Risk Management team which leads the process to identify, classify and control hazards that may occur in food and feed.
·  Assemble, review and interpret data from literature, and where needed data modelling, to evaluate and derive safe intakes (ADI/TDIs etc) of new ingredients and maximums for chemical hazards.
·  Support the Corporate SRA food safety horizon scanning process by reviewing and identifying new or emerging chemical hazards relevant to the business.
·  Review and assess new chemical hazards and be responsible to escalate, communicate and address these hazards through our internal food safety programmes.
·  Act as a key advisor to global and regional product development teams on ingredient inclusion and generate safe intake levels for our consumers.
·  Responsible to write business critical position statements on chemical food safety for use across all segments and Mars Inc.
·  Provide business critical technical input to chemical food safety incidents managed through our internal processes and provide governance on responses.
·  Where required, support SRA and Corp Affairs to review external positions or enquiries to formulate technical responses in areas related to toxicology and chemical safety.
·  Identify and undertake projects to problem solve and close toxicology gaps within the business.
·  Work through key stakeholders across quality, the wider R&D and Commercial teams, to standardize food safety and develop best practices to ensure consistent and rigorous approach to chemical food safety.
·  Act as a key subject matter expert in chemical food safety and lead, where necessary, the development of global tools and advanced training to support the business across Quality, R&D and Commercial functions.
·  Deliver food safety training across all segments and business functions including Quality, R&D and Commercial

To do this role you’ll need:

·  Direct experience in conducting toxicological risk assessment from primary study data.
·  Preferably a minimum of an MSc or PhD in toxicology or closely related discipline.
·  Proven experience in a research environment and track record in risk assessment, scientific reporting, publishing and presenting.
·  Excellent communication, organisational and problem solving skills.
