Main Goal

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
This is a full time regular HM-Clause position supporting the Melon breeding program based at HM-Clause Davis R&D station.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assisting Melon and other cucurbits breeding programs in field trial design, planting, curation, trial evaluating and seed harvest.

Ability to select in program germplasm under the direction of the breeder.

Supervise field and greenhouse crew in seeding, transplanting, crossing blocks, and seed harvest.

Manage breeding data base, seed inventory and shipments for multiple international locations.

Manage seed health testing data and sample collection, and shipment for all seed produced.

Manage molecular marker tissue sampling projects based on breeding program needs.

Interact and collaborate with plant pathologist, molecular biologist in project submission, execution, result tracking, sample collection and data entry.

Manage/maintain phytosanitary quarantine applications, records, databases, and information.

Interact with basic seed manager, foundation seed manager in parent seed production and seed quality assurance.

Work closely with Greenhouse and Field operations management to ensure good plant health to meet desired goals.

Receive and distribute seeds for seed production, variety trials, product development and marketing etc.

Ability to travel internationally 10% - 15% a year.

Profile

Education & work experience required:

B.S. in Plant Science, Horticulture, or equivalent experience.
Working experience in seed industry is desirable.
Working knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access and ability to learn new databases.
Fluent in English; as well as fluency in Spanish is preferred.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
