Evaluation of heat transfer modeling using a 3D CHT approach in RANS - Rueil-Malmaison

Description of the subject:
The proposed subject is part of IFPEN research work on the mobility of the future. One of the major issues associated with this area of ​​research is the realistic modeling of heat transfer to the walls in 3D simulation codes. In particular, the CHT (Conjugate Heat Transfer) models used to describe heat transfer in internal combustion engine and in cooling systems of electrical machines seem to make it possible to apprehend this issue but still need be validated and calibrated.
The modeling of thermal transfers depends strongly on the wall laws and mesh strategies adopted. Given the complexity of the phenomena taking place in particular in internal combustion engines (combustion interactions, internal aerodynamics, spray, moving parts...), the validation of CHT approaches on simplified configurations is required. Recent work carried out at IFPEN has enabled the construction of an experimental database of parietal thermal flux measurements during flame - wall interaction for several combustion modes under representative engine conditions.
The purpose of this internship is to perform 3D simulations of several experimental cases and to compare the results obtained with those of the database.
After a bibliographic phase aiming at acquiring the theoretical bases necessary to understand the issue of thermal transfers by internal combustion engine, the candidate will use ConvergeTM to perform the 3D simulations of the experimental cases.
Finally, the results will be analyzed to identify possible ways to improve the codes (these improvement tracks are not to be adressed within the framework of this internship).

Master's degree or third year of engineering school, with a strong background in CFD
