Role Summary/Purpose

As a Research Engineer - Materials Behavior, you will be directly responsible for both the design of environmental and mechanical testing experiments and the hands-on testing of new structural materials and coatings being developed for applications in aircraft propulsion and power generation. In this role, you will implement the latest technology and test methodologies to understand materials behavior in various operating environments and will support key material development programs across GE.
Essential Responsibilities

You will:

·  Develop and apply test methods for complex environmental and mechanical tests of new structural materials and coatings.
·  Implement experimental methods to simulate operating environments, such as nuclear reactors and aircraft engines.
·  Incorporate the latest technology and test methodologies to enhance the understanding of new structural materials (metals, ceramics, composites) and coatings.
·  Define and execute numerous, concurrent test campaigns to support some of GE’s most important material development programs.
·  Interact and collaborate with materials behavior experts and materials development teams across GE.

Qualifications/Requirements

·   PhD in Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Science or related field or MS degree +2 years of related experience or Bachelors degree with 4+ years of related  experience.
·  Demonstrated experience as an innovative experimentalist with hands-on experience in environmental and/or mechanical testing of structural materials.
·  Experience programming and operating mechanical test frames, pressure systems and high-temperature furnaces.
·  Experience with data acquisition from multiple sources (e.g., displacement, load, pressure, temperature).
·  Familiarity with the properties and behavior of various classes of structural materials (metals, ceramics, composites).
·  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
·  Ability to work independently and in large multidisciplinary teams.Legal
authorization to work in the U.S. is required.

Desired Characteristics

·  Contributions to the field of experimental mechanics (conference presentations, journal publications).
·  Experience with characterization of the corrosion resistance of materials and/or coatings.
·  Experience with advanced in-situ monitoring methods (e.g., digital image correlation, acoustic emission).
·  Familiarity with the behavior of advanced alloys.
·  Familiarity with the behavior of fiber-reinforced composites (PMCs and/or CMCs).
·  Knowledge of statistical analysis, data analytics, and/or machine learning methods.
·  Programming skills (MATLAB, R or Python).
