Role Summary/Purpose

The Electrical Substation Physical Designer is responsible for supporting Electrical Substation Project Engineers and producing timely and accurate drawing packages for complex power delivery projects & proposals, including plan views and elevations, structural / electrical details, ground grid and foundation drawings, tray / conduit / trough drawings, duct bank drawings, and a detailed bill of material. All work must be done to applicable CAD and engineering standards.
Essential Responsibilities

As theElectrical Substation Physical Designer, you will: 

·  Develop substation drawings using working knowledge of the NEC, NESC and/or customer specifications
·  Develop detailed substation layouts / elevations from power one line drawings and basic sketches
·  Generate material take-offs
·  Develop detailed bills of material for substation power equipment, conduit / trough, and cable trays
·  Provide performance based and economic evaluations, selection, application, troubleshooting and maintenance practices for designs
·  Support troubleshooting of field during installation and commissioning
·  Complete complex drawing packages with minimal / no supervision from sketches provided by others
·  Follow quality procedures and standard design processes
·  Perform thorough review checks of own work and the work of others
·  Update engineers and PM with job completion estimates and status

Qualifications/Requirements

·  Associate's Degree in Drafting and Design Technology from an accredited university or college (OR High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 5 years progressive relative work experience)
·  Minimum of 2 years of experience designing substation physical drawings, and creating detailed bills of materials
·  Minimum of 2 years of drafting experience in Bentley Microstation or AutoCAD
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

·  Ability and willingness to travel a minimum of 10% to support design projects
·  PLEASE NOTE: This position can be located in either Oakbrook,
IL or San Ramon, CA.  Relocation assistance is offered.

Desired Characteristics

·  Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering  from an accredited university or college
·  Minimum of 5 years of experience as an electrical physical designer for a utility or engineering firm
·  Knowledge of electrical drawing symbols and their purpose
·  Ability to read one-lines and three-line substation drawings
·  Experience with substation AIS and GIS substation design in 3D with BIM
·  Experience with field installation and construction
·  Experience with electrical substation design, including GIS HV and EHV products
·  Experience with major U.S. utility substation design standards   
·  Programming experience using VBA for Microsoft Excel and/or Access
·  High proficiency with both AutoCAD and Bentley Microstation
·  Design experience with civil foundations, steel detailing, and electrical power equipment such as support structures and insulators
·  Cross knowledge of protection and control design, including schematics and wiring
·  Solid understanding of design drafting practices and engineering systems utilized in the power industry
·  Ability to develop rendering for 3D CAD as well as Virtual or Augmented Reality walk or fly throughs
·  Demonstrated knowledge of desktop computers and Microsoft Office products
·  Demonstrated familiarity with web-based design collaboration sites and drawing management systems
·  Ability to work independently and effectively interface with a multi-discipline engineering team and project managers
·  Detail oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills
·  Continually strives for a professional product with a quality & process mindset
·  Experience following quality assurance processes while working in a projects schedule-driven environment
·  Customer focused with ability to adapt to various customer standards
·  Excellent written and verbal communication skills
