Role Summary/Purpose
The Power Conversion Rotating Machines Rugby Engineering Team is responsible for the design and engineering of generators withing Power, Industrial, Marine and Naval markets.
The Lead Design For Manufacturing (DFM) Engineer is to be the link between our innovative design engineers and the Manufacturing team to ensure that we produce a high quality product following LEAN manufacturing principals and meeting the quality and performance criteria we expect.
Essential Responsibilities
To support the project team in the design, coordination and review of manufacturing tooling, manufacturing process steps and acts as a key liaison between Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality departments.
As well as designing and specifying tooling requirements, the DFM Engineer will be present during the build of the project to help monitor build progress and ensure Engineering requirements are being followed. Working closely with the Engineering project team, the DFM Engineer will help produce/review step by step manufacturing drawings/documentation to help ensure the Engineering design intent is captured accurately to ensure repeatability. Using their experience help to ensure adherence to Lean manufacturing principles.
Plans and coordinates manufacturing processes. Develops, evaluates, and enhances manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards.
Analyzes and plans work force utilization, space requirements, and workflow, and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency. Confers with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods. Determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards. Estimates production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.
From the Engineering drawings and specifications, they must establish and drive technical strategy in order to specify tooling that is compliant with regulations and our Engineering Design Standards. They will work alongside the project team to ensure that tooling is made in accordance with Engineering’s requirements and the drawings of the supplier’s components are uploaded into the GEPC drawing system and are kept up to date.
In addition, the DFM Engineer is a technical expert who will also liaise closely with suppliers and members of the project team, participate in Design Reviews and Ready For Manufacture reviews. During the build of the machine, they will be Engineering’s eyes and ears on the shop floor, helping to support the build and resolve issues as they arise with the project team.
Qualifications/Requirements
• Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering HNC/HND, Degree (or equivalent) or higher.
• Experience in heavy engineering environment.
Desired Characteristics
• Experience of working on Lean focused projects to eliminate waste and reduce cost/manufacturing times.
• Knowledge of rotating machines products, their engineering challenges and manufacturing processes.
• Experienced in engineering design processes and tools – ANSYS, Auto CAD and/or Creo/ProE.
• Computer literate in Microsoft Office + applications.
• Flexible approach, willing to work extended hours and travel as and when required.
• Good written and oral skills.
• Methodical worker with focus on attention to detail.
• Structured in approach and well organised.
• Motivating and influencing change agent, driven, self-starter who reacts well under pressure.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a challenging and fast moving environment.
• Knowledge and experience in using SAP and Teamcentre
