Job Description

Start date: July 2020
Location: Portsmouth

To stay on top, Airbus recognises the importance of supporting high-achieving and talented undergraduates. We do this through offering challenging internship opportunities during which your skills and potential are fully maximised.

Our internships give a unique insight into potential career paths within Airbus. They are designed so that you can put your theoretical knowledge into practice and gain crucial industry experience. The skills and knowledge you gain will improve your chances of a future role within the Airbus and should benefit your future studies.

The Portsmouth Mechanical Design Office (MDO) supports the Telecom satellites Business Unit to layout the payload including equipment and RF connectivity design for a variety of platform such as the Eurostar3000 and Eurostar Neo platforms. We are now also developing new exciting platforms for use on satellite constellations. Our mission is to layout the payload equipment in 3D, provide stress and thermal justification, and produce the installation drawings and bill of materials to allow a quick and efficient assembly of our satellites. We also create the testing definition and detailed design to support the testing activities.

As part of the MDO, the Stress and Thermal Group performs detailed hand calculations and Finite Element (FE) analyses of the payload to validate its use for space flight. We are engaged in the transformation of our company as a part of the journey to Industry 4.0, supporting the digitalization exercise, as a key contributor in the product digitalization and data continuity.

As the Stress & Thermal Automation intern, you will work closely with our colleagues on site and across Europe to adapt and improve our processes to meet this goal. You will be in charge of maintaining and updating the internal software the team uses on a daily basis. You will become familiar with the processes used by the team with regard to stress and thermal justification of satellite waveguides and equipment – leading to a much greater understanding of Finite Element Methods along the way. You will be given project responsibility from the start. It’s a great opportunity to create bespoke programs and leave your footprint at Airbus.

Testimony from one of our interns:

“Thank you for giving me the chance to learn so much! I really appreciate the responsibility you’ve left me, especially because I have always known that the support was there if I needed it. You’ve set me a high bar to aspire to!”

Task & accountabilities :

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;

·  Becoming familiar with the processes of providing Stress and Thermal Justification of satellite components.
·  Developing your understanding of Finite Element Methods and Stress Analysis for use in satellite application.
·  Understanding and mapping of existing processes with the view of improving them and developing new ones.
·  Creating or Updating existing software to meet the needs of the stress & thermal team
·  Debugging and fixing the teams custom tools
·  Contributing to Process improvements and creating new/adding to existing software

Guidance and supervision will always be available, but you will be given a large degree of autonomy and responsibility to develop the project in your own way.

Skills :

Please note, we love your interest in working for Airbus but we do ask that you make only one application. We encourage you to take time to decide which of our exciting opportunities is right for you and then submit an application that best represents you, your skills and experience in connection with the role you have selected.

One application: Make It Possible, Make It Happen, Make It ... Count!

Our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following

·  An understanding of Finite Element Methods
·  The Ability to work well within a team and to organically solve problems as they appear
·  Innovative ways of thinking to contribute ideas on how to improve processes

The nature of the role requires a candidate who is self-motivated, and unafraid to ask the questions necessary to get up to speed in the fast paced and dynamic environment of the Mechanical Design Office.

The selected candidate will be fully supported and guided by the current intern during the first month of their internship. This will allow them to be fully familiar with their role and responsibilities within 1 month of contract commencement.
