The Airframe Tolerancing team within Airbus Engineering provides specialist tolerancing (dimensional variation management) solutions for all Airbus programmes such as A380, A400M, A350 and Wing of Tomorrow. We have representatives in France, Germany and Spain, and the UK, and are managed centrally from Toulouse. We also have ties with Airbus Americas and Airbus India Engineering.

In the UK we work on complex metallic and composite wing structures, but also control systems. Europe wide we also work on fuselage, control surfaces and systems, cabin and cargo, helicopters and space vehicles. We integrate with engineering design, stress, aerodynamic, manufacturing, and quality departments, among others, within a global digitised environment.

The internship gives fascinating insight into the design, manufacture and installation of airframe and, particularly, wing structures. Understanding how a wing is designed, and manufactured, and applying appropriate tolerancing solutions is essential for achieving the required quality, cost and timing in a competitive market.

Tasks and Accountabilities:

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;

·  Deploy Key Characteristics / Important Features.
·  1D/2D tolerance analysis using stack-chaining methods and tools.
·  Computer modelling for 3D tolerance analysis using CATIA V5 3D CAD and integrated 3D specialist tolerancing software.
·  Identification and management of tolerances in the End-to-End digital toolsets.
·  Identification and management of tolerance share agreements and definition for engineering drawings.
·  Data analysis
·  Creation and update of engineering drawings.

Our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

You can demonstrate the following;

·  Good understanding of mechanics and geometry
·  You can work in a multi-functional team environment
·  Good report writing skills

Skills - Specific - gained either through course syllabus or additional reading:

·  Knowledge of tolerancing standards such as ISO1101 (or similar) Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) / Geometric Product Specification (GPS) and EN9100 Key Characteristic (KC)
·  Principles and application of Datum and Reference Systems
·  Awareness or experience of tolerancing methods
·  Awareness or experience of 3D modelling techniques and tools (CAD software, CATIA)
