Veterinary Nurse

An exciting position for a full time Veterinary Nurse has arisen for my client, a large global FMCG organisation based in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire, situated a few miles away from Melton Mowbray. This is an excellent opportunity to grow and develop within a highly renowned and unique business.

Contract Duration: 8 weeks

Day of Work: Mon - Fri

Hours of work: 37.5 hrs

Pay rate: £14.30 per hour

Job Purpose

Our clients Centre for Pet Nutrition is their global hub of pet care and nutritional expertise. Its remit is to deliver 'high-quality, innovative science conducted in a caring way'. The purpose of the veterinary nurse role is to deliver and support provision of veterinary care to the pet population thus enabling effective and efficient delivery of the research programme. As well as to perform trial-related procedures on dogs and cats in a manner that is consistent with the client's strategy and philosophy and ensuring compliance with relevant legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

·  Delivery and continuous improvement of the healthcare programme.

·  Provision of nursing veterinary care during routine and non-routine veterinary rounds and surgery.

·  Provision of nursing support to the pet population without direct support from the Veterinary Surgeon through nurse clinics, advising and guiding other associates in animal care programs.

·  Work closely with the Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) and Operations Activity Manager (OAM) to ensure the effective co-ordination and delivery of all healthcare programmes.

·  Develop tracking and reporting mechanisms to ensure results of healthcare programmes are visible to stakeholders and liaise with the NVS/OAM to follow up on any issues arising in an appropriate and timely manner.

·  Development of training material and training of personnel in veterinary care. This includes but is not limited to training of unit teams in pet health assessments and treatment administration and tasks related to breeding.

·  Be responsible for the development, implementation and application of continuous improvement projects within veterinary care, these programs can include, but are not limited to introduction of veterinary specialist techniques, such as physiotherapy or hydrotherapy. Other projects may include the introduction of new and improved facilities to improve diagnostics or treatments.

·  Manage and be accountable for the veterinary suites. Ensure vet suites are appropriately equipped, stocked and fit for purpose and operates at maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

·  Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor in co-ordination of radiation safety ensuring compliance with relevant legislative requirements.

·  Perform regulated and non-regulated trial related procedures under a Home office license and legalities including induction and monitoring of sedation and anaesthesia without direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Your HO license deems you legally responsible for the safety and welfare of each animal during your procedure.

·  Liaise with research team to ensure all pets on site are fit to participate in research trials and to minimise impact of veterinary treatments on research trials.

·  To hold an active ASPeL (Animals Scientific Procedures e-License) and maintain skill level determined by the Named Trainer and Competency Officer.

·  Act as a source of support and advice to personnel with regards to the fulfilment of animal healthcare delivery.

Context and Scope.

The job holder will work within a team of two veterinary nurses and two full time veterinary surgeons. The job holder is expected to communicate effectively within this team environment and with members of the wider team.

·  The job holder is expected to drive a high quality of veterinary care delivery through day to day activities and continuous improvement projects. This includes effective liaison with the unit teams to deliver health care of the population.

·  The ultimate purpose of the veterinary care programme is to ensure a healthy pet population, driving animal welfare and a pet population that is available to participate in research trials. The job holder therefore must work with the research team to understand trial needs and to minimise impact of veterinary care programmes on research without compromising animal welfare.

·  The job holder is expected to keep the functional technical knowledge necessary to be successful in the role up to date, and any specialisation supporting and raising the quality of the veterinary care programme is encouraged.

·  Responsible for performing veterinary nurse duties, including nurse clinics without the supervision of a veterinary surgeon, anaesthetics and surgery with a veterinary surgeon and be the first responders to the animal care staff in regards of animal health.

·  Perform regulated trial related procedures including but not limited to:

·  Blood sampling

·  Sedation

·  General anaesthesia including induction and intubation

·  X-rays and scanning

·  Dental procedures including oral radiographs
